Attendant care

How to choose a home attendant in Hyderabad

Families usually start looking for a home attendant on a bad week. A parent has come home from hospital, or the person who was helping has left. The search fills up with words that all sound the same: experienced, caring, available today. Those words do not tell you whether someone can help your father to the bathroom at 1 a.m. without frightening him. Choosing well means smaller questions, and an honest description of the house.

Start with the hours, not the slogan

Write down the heavy hours before you call anyone. In many Hyderabad flats the hard part is the morning: bath, clothes, breakfast, and the first medicines. In others the day is manageable and the night is the thing that breaks the family. A twelve-hour day attendant and a night attendant are different bookings. A twenty-four-hour plan is usually two people with a handover, not one person left awake until they are unsafe. If an agency offers round-the-clock cover with a single name and no mention of sleep, ask who is actually in the room at 3 a.m.

Also name the floor, the stairs, and the society gate. An attendant who arrives after the service lift has closed is not late by character. They were booked without the building in mind. Hyderabad apartments often have visitor rules, and a watchman who needs a name. Share that on the first call. It saves the first morning.

Say what the person can and cannot do

Be plain about movement. Can your parent stand with one person holding an elbow, or do they need two people and a wheelchair? Can they sit for a meal? Are they confused after dark? A good service will change the plan when they hear this. A weak one will say yes and send whoever is free. At Sree Sai Home Care we would rather tell you we need a different attendant than pretend every person suits every bed.

Separate clinical work from bedside help. An aaya can help with bathing, turning, meals, water, and the medicine boxes you have already set out. An aaya should not inject, dress a wound that needs a nurse, or change a doctor's instruction. If you need a nurse for a procedure and an attendant for the long hours between, book both. Putting both jobs on one tired person is how things get missed.

Woman or man is a real preference

Say it at the start. Many older women want a woman for the bath and will refuse help, politely and completely, from a man. Some men feel the same in reverse. This is not a small detail to sort out on the doorstep. It is the difference between a shift that works and a shift where your parent will not let the attendant into the bathroom at all. Age of the attendant matters to families too. A younger, alert person on a night shift is often what people are hoping for, provided they have actually done nights before and are not learning your house in a panic.

Meet them before the long shift if you can

A ten-minute introduction in the evening tells you more than a list of claims. Watch how they speak to your parent, not only to you. Do they raise their voice because they assume age means deafness? Do they ask where the bathroom is, where the medicines are, and whom to call? Do they look at the person in the bed while you explain the pain on the left side? You are not hiring a performance. You are watching whether the room becomes calmer.

Agree the handover if the booking crosses a full day. The person leaving should say what was eaten, whether medicines were taken, how the person slept, and anything that worried them. You should not have to drag this out with questions. Write your own notes for the first three days as well: appetite, toilet, mood, and any new confusion. Patterns show up faster on paper than in a tired memory.

Money, replacement, and the first week

Ask how fast a replacement comes if someone is ill. Leave a short note in the house: medicines, food that is not allowed, the relative to call, and the doctor's number. The attendant should not have to remember a speech given once at the door.
